Illustration for Engineering Agents for Analysis Software

Status: Research. This page describes the goal and approach; it will be updated as work is verified.

Engineering context

Language models can interpret an engineer’s intent, but analysis software needs exact inputs: units, sections, load cases, supports. Letting a model improvise those inputs is not acceptable in structural work.

Challenge

Give an agent useful reach into engineering software while keeping every action explicit, reviewable and reversible.

Workflow

  1. Expose specific software actions as defined tools — for example create a grid, assign sections or read results.
  2. Require the agent to state units, assumptions and inputs before acting.
  3. Log every tool call so the sequence can be inspected and repeated.
  4. Stop at decision points for engineer approval.

Automation created

A set of tool interfaces for analysis and BIM software is being researched and refined. Details will be shared as the approach matures.

Tools used

  • ETABS
  • SAFE
  • Revit
  • Python
  • LLM

Outcome

Research in progress. No performance claims are made until the approach has been evaluated on known cases.

Limitations and scope

Agents do not make engineering decisions. They operate tools on instruction, and every output is subject to engineer review.
